How to Train a Dog to Sit – The Easy Way…
It's quite easy to teach your dog to sit. Dogs tend to sit naturally anyway; all you need to do is associate the command with the action. This requires a little patience on your part, but it can be achieved quickly if you practice with your dog for around 10 minutes, 2-3 times a day. Here's how you do it: -
Step #1: Get your dog's attention and show them that you're holding a treat in your hand. Hold the treat just above your dog's nose, but don't hold it too high or they may jump.
Step #2: Say your dog's name following by your command or cue word, which in this case is "sit". Say this firmly and move the treat slowly towards your dog's ears. If and when your dog's rear hits the ground, say "good sit" in an upbeat tone.
Step #3: Give your dog the treat and remember to praise it. Repeat all of the above 5-6 times, 2-3 times a day. Using positive reinforcement you can communicate with your dog effectively and encourage the desired behaviour. Don't be tempted to force your dog to sit, as this will be ineffective in most cases.
Try holding training sessions in different areas, both indoors and outdoors. Once your dog becomes an expert at sitting, gradually fade out the treats over time, otherwise your dog will come to expect a treat every time. It's still a good idea to praise your dog every time they sit on command.
