Some Tips to Stop Your Dog Barking…

Barking is perfectly natural behaviour for a dog, but the problem here arises when your dog won't stop barking! Why do they bark in the first place? Rest assured, they aren't barking simply to annoy you, or because they can; they bark because they are lonely, bored or anxious.

So, how do you stop a dog from barking excessively? First we need to understand what is causing them to bark in the first place. To start with, we need to sort out some entertainment. This is especially important if you spend a lot of time out of the house, leaving your dog alone. You need to find a way to entertain your dog; otherwise they'll become lonely and anxious.

Obedience training comes in handy here. This allows you to communicate effectively with your dog and discourage undesired behaviour whilst positively reinforcing the acceptable behaviour. It's also a good way to tire your dog out quickly, as the combination of physical and mental efforts will be exhausting. You can also try giving your dog chew toys in order to distract them and draw their attention away from barking.

Using positive reinforcement techniques to reward your dog's good behaviour is probably the most effective way of stopping your dog from barking. It takes a little time and patience on your part, but you will be rewarded. Start by thinking up a cue word or phrase such as "stop barking". When your dog starts barking, say this firmly and wait for a few seconds.

Hold out a dog treat for your dog, but don't let them have it yet. Normally during these few seconds, your dog may examine the treat. If your dog starts barking again, repeat your cue, and wait a few seconds before giving them the treat. If their barking ceases, praise your dog immediately. You must do this within a few seconds though; any longer and your dog will simply be confused. Keep this up; it's important to be consistent as this is how dogs learn.
